Birth Mother Counseling and Peer Support

If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy, you’re probably also facing a complicated mix of emotions. These may include confusion, uncertainty, sadness, and worry. You may be wondering where to turn for help or worrying if you’re making the right choice.

Know that there’s help available for you, and it’s designed specifically to meet your needs. It’s part of our birth mother counseling and peer support network. Peer counseling from a birth mother can give you the support you need as you sort through your feelings and make a decision that’s right for you and your baby. Lifetime Adoption’s compassionate and caring adoption experts can help you make the most of the resources available to you.

Birth mothers never have to pay for peer counseling offered to them by Lifetime Adoption. While our peer counselors are not social workers, they do represent a support person for our birth mothers.

Choosing adoption — and choosing Lifetime as your adoption agency — means we will work with you (birth parents, birth fathers, birth families) throughout the adoption process. But for the birth mother, counselors are available to you specifically.

Thinking About Adoption

Most women thinking about adoption experience moments of doubt. Your peer counselor can help you understand these feelings because she’s been where you’re at right now. All of Lifetime’s peer counselors are birth mothers themselves, having made an adoption plan for their child. They have birth mother stories and adoption stories to share, which we encourage you to review.

It can really help to talk with someone who has also gone through an adoption! Consider the following quotes and stories from some of our birth mothers. Does any of this sound familiar to you?

Adrianne

“When I first found out I was pregnant, I thought my life was over,” Adrianne says. “I was in disbelief.”

Despite the fact that her pregnancy was unplanned, Adrianne chose to give birth to a son. She also decided to place the child with adoptive parents. To this day, Adrianne visits her son once a year in Atlanta for his birthday and is very happy with her choice of adoptive parents for her son.

Sarah

Sarah chose open adoption through Lifetime Adoption’s program. She said she knew there were things that her son would need that she would not be able to provide.

“That’s where I had to separate myself,” Sarah says. “That’s where I had to break my own heart to do what was best for him. I’m so proud that I made this decision for him. He’s flourishing. I can’t think of anything more wonderful than knowing that he’s gonna be forever loved. I want birth moms to know that they can do anything.”

Hannah

Hannah, who was adopted as a child — along with her four siblings — was “devastated” when she became pregnant as a high school sophomore. She says if her situation had been better, she would have chosen to parent her daughter herself. Instead, she made the difficult but loving choice to place her baby for adoption through Lifetime.

“I knew it was best for her to have the family that she has now,” Hannah says. “Just knowing that I’m placing my daughter into a better situation than I could provide for her just gave me comfort.”

Birth Mother Peer Counseling

As we mentioned above, peer counseling, like all our birth mother services, is available free of charge. This remains true whether you continue with an open adoption through Lifetime Adoption or not. You can choose to receive counseling both during your decision-making process and after your baby goes home with his or her adoptive parents.

Plus, you can speak with your peer counselor regularly or only check in with her occasionally when you need support. It’s up to you to decide what type of adoption experience you want to have, and what type of relationship you want to have with your peer counselor.

To speak with an expert adoption coordinator today, call or text Lifetime Adoption. We have so many wonderful programs for women just like you. Birth mother counseling and one-on-one peer counseling is just one of the many things we can provide for you as you begin your adoption journey.

We care about you, and we look forward to speaking with you. No matter your age (teenager, 20 years old, 30 years old, or older!) we can help you put together an adoption plan that makes you happy and excited about your child’s future. We have many adoptive families waiting to adopt — adoptive moms and dads ready to give your child the love, attention, and care they will need to thrive as they grow up.

“I talked to a woman who placed her baby seven years ago. Because of her support, I knew what to expect after placement. I felt normal because of her; she was able to tell me ‘oh yeah I felt like that too. You aren’t crazy. You’ll get through this.’ She offered me a shoulder to cry on and didn’t judge me.”
